When you are walking around Piazza del Popolo, you might find yourself in search of some liquid energy in the form of a delicious espresso. The caffè at Bar Rosati might not be an obvious choice but with a bit of bravery I can assure you that you won’t find a better espresso or a more welcoming staff anywhere else in Rome.

A Quick History Of Bar Rosati

The history of Bar Rosati spans almost the entire twentieth century, whose stars are the greatest names in Italian literary and artistic culture. The location of Rosati, before 1922, contained a dairy that was purchased by the Rosati brothers, Enrico and Marco, which would be built into the historic Bar Rosati in Piazza del Popolo, which is among the most famous in Rome.

For a hundred years, Rosati has hosted in its bar and in its outdoor seating area artists, tourists and customers who, since the day Enrico and Marco Rosati gave life to this restaurant, never stopped experiencing the fascinating and romantic setting of Piazza del Popolo.

Is Bar Rosati A Restaurant Or A Bar?

This is a very fair question because there are white jacketed waitstaff that are standing outside greeting you and encouraging you to join them for lunch or dinner. From the outside it definitely looks like a restaurant, but if you summon the courage to enter in the morning, you will find a thriving caffè just inside the doors and ready to serve you.

Their bar area has a great selection of popular pastries that will pair well with your coffee and if you walk around, you will find beautifully designed seating areas that harken back to an earlier time, but just as inviting. 

My Experience At Bar Rosati

I did approach the bar with a little bit of hesitation because even though it was before 9:00AM, the staff did look like they were ready to seat people outside for breakfast. I tentatively strolled past these folks and entered the bar area. Once I was through the doors, it was obvious that it was what I was looking for.

Once entering, I was immediately greeted by someone behind the counter asking how they could serve me. I incorrectly assumed she was standing at the cash register (cassa), so I placed my order and pulled out money to pay. I then realized I should put my money away because this wasn’t (necessarily) a “Pay First” type of bar.

I pulled up to the bar and waited for my cappuccino and cornetto. The banter was lively and the baristas were efficient. I was served immediately a delicious coffee and a fresh pastry and I was able to quickly enjoy myself at the bar while admiring the decor. Once I finished, I turned to where the cash register actually was and paid my bill. I asked politely if I could take some pictures and I was happily granted permission.

How Much Is A Cup Of Coffee At Bar Rosati?

Coffee in Rome is quite affordable, with an espresso usually setting you back between €1 and €1.20, and a cappuccino between €1.20 and €1.50. You might find one slightly cheaper or a bit more expensive, but these are definitely exceptions to the rule. Also, these are the prices for drinking at the counter, so if you want to sit at a table, you can expect to pay a bit more for the comfort.

Coffee at Bar Rosati is a little bit more expensive than the norm, which is most likely because of their location and touristy clients. I don’t have the exact breakdown of the items because my receipt only had the total amount, which was €3.50 for the Cappuccino and Espresso (listed as a single item).

It is a little more expensive, but not totally unexpected. You should also expect to pay quite a bit more if you choose to sit outside, but then you aren’t just paying for the coffee, you are paying for the view of Piazza del Popolo.

What Is Piazza del Popolo?

Piazza del Popolo (Rome), which translates to The People’s Plaza, is an imposing open space at the junction of the three main streets of the historic center of Rome: via del Babuino, via del Corso and via di Ripetta. Here is a map of the location:

This lively area of the city is a “Must See” because of the high-end and luxury fashion stores along Via del Corso, Via dei Condotti and the other side streets between the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna, Rome, and Piazza del Popolo.

The piazza is within the Aurelian Walls and is at the northern gate. The gate was called Porta Flaminia during the time of ancient Rome, but today is known as Porta del Popolo.
